List the school, the credential or program, and the dates you can explain, with the newest program first. Add a GPA, a course, or an honor only when you can point to it, and drop high school once a later program is on the page unless the posting asks. The block later is fictional, and this site has not measured a GPA cutoff.

The school line

One program is one block. Put the school, the credential or the program name, and the dates. A city is optional. Month and year is enough when you know the month. Use the same date style as the jobs.

Write the credential you earned, using the school's name for it. If the program did not grant a degree, name the program. Do not print a degree you did not receive.

A program you have not finished

If you are enrolled and the school has given an end date, you can write expected with that date. If you stopped and you are not finishing, write coursework or attended, plus the years you were there. Do not print the degree name as if you earned it.

A career change that depends on a recent course can put that course above the jobs. How to write a career change resume covers that order. Resume section order is the general rule: education leads when it is the closer proof.

GPA, coursework, and honors

Add a GPA when you know the number and the scale the school uses, and you are willing to say it out loud. If you do not remember it, leave it off. This site did not measure a minimum that employers want, so this page has no cutoff.

Relevant coursework is one line of classes you can describe, not the full catalog. A class project with a task can also sit under projects or experience. How to write a resume with no experience shows that move for a first resume.

An honor belongs when you can name it as the school named it. A list you cannot place in a term stays off. Do not invent a ranking.

High school and older lines

Once a later program is listed, high school usually comes off, unless the posting asks for it. Resume section order lists that omission with the other items that do not belong unless a form asks.

An older certificate stays when it is still true and the posting uses it. If it expired and you cannot confirm a renewal, leave it off or write the year it ended. Do not call an expired credential current.

A fictional education block

Fictional writing model. Mina Alvarez is invented. The notes say enrollment in a community college business program, expected 2027, and one course that built a shared expense sheet. The notes do not include a GPA, a high school name, or an honor.

Education
City College, business program, expected 2027
Coursework: built a shared expense sheet for a class assignment.

The GPA line is absent because the notes do not contain one. High school is absent because a later program is listed and the notes do not ask for it. The course stays as coursework, not as a degree.

What the checker looks for

The resume checker looks for an education heading on its own line, along with experience and skills headings, in text you paste. It does not require a GPA, and it does not score an interview. A missing GPA is not a failed check.

The job description keyword extractor lists phrases in a posting, including a credential the posting names. The resume keyword matcher counts how many extracted phrases also appear in the resume. That count is overlap on this site, not an employer result. Use the school's wording for a credential you earned. Do not add a license you do not hold so the count rises. The formula is in what an online ATS score measures.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a GPA on my resume?

Only if you know the number and the scale and you want it there. If you do not remember it, leave it off. This site did not measure a cutoff. The sample on this page is fictional and has no GPA.

How do I list a degree I have not finished?

If you are enrolled, you can write expected and the school's end date. If you stopped, write coursework or attended and the years you were there. Do not print a degree you did not earn.

Should high school stay on the page?

Not once a later program is listed, unless the posting asks. A form that asks for every school is the exception.

Where should the education section go?

Above experience when the program is the closer proof, and below it when a job already shows the tasks. A career-change page uses the same test.
