You can write a cover letter with little or no paid work if you have one real activity you can describe and a posting requirement that activity actually matches. Name the role and the company, stay inside facts you could say out loud, and put that same activity on the resume in shorter form. A letter does not replace a missing skill, license, or task: the page can explain what you did, and it cannot invent what you have not done.

The letter below is a fictional writing model. Copy the shape only when the facts are yours. If the posting says not to include a letter, skip it. That choice is spelled out in do I need a cover letter.

A short structure

A common length is about half a page. That is common practice, not a hard rule, and this site did not measure a preferred length. If the employer sets a limit, follow it. The same habit is in how to write a cover letter with AI.

  1. Opening. The role, the company, and one true reason. The reason can be a task in the posting that you have done in class, on a volunteer shift, or in another setting you can name.
  2. The activity. What you did, under its real name. Do not rename a class project as a job. Do not rename a cafe shift as the role you hope to get.
  3. The link. One requirement from this posting, and the part of your activity that matches it. If nothing matches, do not invent a match.
  4. Close. Thank them and say you can talk about the example. When the closing field on the cover letter generator is left blank, the template uses “Thank you for considering my application.”

One plain sentence is enough if you need to say the work was unpaid. Then go back to the task. Skip a paragraph that only apologizes.

What to say when paid work is thin

Use the same sources as how to write a resume with no experience: coursework, a project, volunteering, a club role, informal work, or a part-time job in another field. An internship or freelance task counts when you did it. Keep the original name. A cafe shift stays a cafe shift.

The example should already appear, in shorter form, on the resume. Add it there before you apply if it is missing. Resume bullet point examples includes fictional lines for class work and volunteering, with no number when the notes have none. Where the activity sits is in resume section order. The job description keyword extractor lists phrases in a posting. Reuse one only when it is true. The resume keyword matcher counts how many of those phrases also appear in the resume. That count is overlap on this site, not an employer result.

One fictional letter

Fictional writing model. The person, the college, the library, and the tasks are invented. The notes behind the letter are a cataloging exercise and a campus pantry shift. There is no paid library job in the notes, so the letter does not add one.

Dear Hiring Manager,

I am applying for the Library Assistant role at Northline Branch Library. I am finishing a library technician program at City College, and I want this role because the posting lists shelf order and a shared log of donated items.

In a cataloging exercise, I recorded item locations in a spreadsheet. On a campus pantry shift, I sorted weekly food donations and logged them in a shared sheet. I have not held a paid library job.

The posting asks for careful records and for keeping materials in order. Those are the two tasks I can describe.

Thank you for considering my application.

Sincerely,
Jordan Hale

The letter does not claim a library job title or a count of items. Cut any line the notes do not support. The cover letter generator rearranges fields you type. It does not call an AI model. If another tool smooths the sentences, delete any job, tool, or number you did not supply.

What a letter cannot do

A clear letter can show why you are applying and which activity is the proof. It cannot create a skill, a license, or time in a paid role. If a certification is required and you do not hold it, do not replace that line with “fast learner.” The resume checker looks at headings, bullet length, and a few wording rules in resume text you paste. It does not judge an interview. What an online ATS score measures is keyword overlap on this site, not a result from an employer.

Checklist

  • The role and the company are in the first paragraph.
  • The activity keeps its real name.
  • One posting requirement is tied to work you did.
  • No metric, tool, or title was added to sound stronger.
  • The same activity is already on the resume.
  • You would say each sentence out loud.

Frequently asked questions

Can I write a cover letter if I have never had a paid job?

Yes, if you can describe a real activity and connect it to this posting. Keep the original name. Do not invent a job title. The sample letter on this page is fictional.

What if nothing I have done matches the posting?

Do not send a letter that pretends a match. A letter does not replace a skill, license, or task you do not have. Pick a requirement you can support, or a different role.

Should the letter repeat my resume?

Tell the same story in sentences, using one activity the resume already lists. Do not add a result, a tool, or an employer the resume does not show.

Will a template on this site invent experience?

No. The cover letter generator places the fields you type into a fixed shape. A blank closing uses one thank-you line. It does not call an AI model. You still read the draft.
