A resume and a CV are different documents when the posting is in the United States, and they are often the same kind of job application when the posting says CV in the UK or much of Europe. Send the document the posting names, and follow that country's habits for length and personal details. An academic CV is a third case, because it records research, teaching, and publications rather than a one-page job history.

The outlines later are fictional writing models. This site did not survey employers, and it did not measure a preferred length in any country. This page is not legal advice about what an employer may ask. Copy the shape only when the facts are yours.

The short difference

  • United States. A resume is the private-sector document, often one page early and two pages later, without a photo, a date of birth, or marital status. CV usually means the academic or research record.
  • UK and Ireland. CV is the usual job application, often about two pages, and those personal details are commonly left off. Academic jobs still want the scholarly record and often ask for referees.
  • Continental Europe. CV is the usual name. Some traditional CVs, including a German Lebenslauf, still show a photo or a date of birth. Add either only when the posting asks. Europass is for when the posting names that form.
  • Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Canada usually uses a resume for private-sector jobs and a CV for academic and research roles. Australia and New Zealand use both words. Follow the posting.

Which file to send

Send the document the posting names. If it says resume, use the resume habits where the job is. If it says CV for private-sector work in the UK, Ireland, or much of Europe, send that country's CV. If it says CV for faculty, research, or a fellowship, send the academic record. If it allows either word, use the habit for that kind of job in that country.

Follow a length or a template the posting sets. The one-page or two-page test in how long a resume should be is for a US-style resume. Do not send both files unless the form has two slots. Renaming a one-page resume to CV does not add publications.

What stays the same

The filename does not change the facts. Keep the real job title, the dates you can explain, and tools you have used. Leave off a metric you cannot point to. Section order for a US-style early-career resume is in resume section order. The job-list layout is a separate choice in chronological, functional, and combination resumes.

A US resume leaves off a photo, a date of birth, marital status, and a full street address. A European CV adds a photo or a birth date only when asked. Referee names go on the file only when the posting asks. That sheet is in how to list references on a resume.

A fictional pair

Fictional writing model. Morgan Ellis is invented. The notes are a cataloging exercise and a campus pantry shift. The academic version also has a dissertation title and two papers the notes say were written. The library-assistant resume does not add the papers.

That block is a US-style resume: no photo and no date of birth. The academic CV for a research role keeps the education and adds "Dissertation: shelf order in a small branch collection" and "Two course papers on donation logs." It can run past two pages once real publications exist. It does not invent a third paper.

Check the file, not the label

The resume checker looks for experience, education, and skills headings, plus bullet length and a few wording rules, in text you paste. It does not decide whether the file is a resume or a CV, and it does not score an interview. The resume summary generator writes from the role, optional years, strengths, and optional direction you type. Blank years or direction are left out. It does not choose the document type.

The resume keyword matcher counts phrase overlap in pasted text. That count is overlap on this site, not an employer result, and the filename does not change it. The formula is in what an online ATS score measures. File type and a single column are in ATS-friendly resume tips. Before you send, match the posting's word, add a photo or a birth date only if asked, and keep scholarly lines you can explain.

Frequently asked questions

Is a CV the same as a resume?

In the UK, Ireland, and much of Europe, CV names the job application. In the United States, resume is that document, and CV usually means the academic record.

Which one should I send?

Send the document the posting names. Do not send both unless the form has two slots. The outlines on this page are fictional.

Should a European CV include a photo?

Only when the posting asks, or when you are matching a sample the employer pointed to. A US resume leaves the photo off. This page is not legal advice.

Is an academic CV just a long resume?

No. It lists research, teaching, and publications you can confirm. It is not trimmed to one page to match a private-sector habit, and it does not add papers you did not write.
